Sleep Apnoea is the technical term for when a person stops breathing whilst they are sleeping and wake up holding their breath, gasping or even choking.

Breathing might stop anywhere from a few seconds to longer than a minute and these gaps can occur several hundred times a night, impairing your ability to reach the deep, restful phases of sleep your body and mind need to perform at their best.

SNORING AND SLEEP APNOEA ARE NOT THE SAME

Even though there is a link between snoring and sleep apnoea, they can occur independently. In other words, not everyone who snores has sleep apnoea and not everyone with sleep apnoea snores.

Sleep Apnoea can be classified as Mild, Moderate or Severe.

SIMPLE STEPS TO REDUCE OR PREVENT SNORING & SLEEP APNOEA (SLEEP HYGIENE)

Even though a high percentage of people who snore have a genetic predisposition to it there are things you can do to reduce the harmful side effects- particularly if you also suffer from sleep apnoea.

Stop smoking

25% of smoker experience sleep disruptions compared to only 5% of non smokers. You’ll sleep better, feel better and save money!

Side Sleeping

Try sleeping on your side. It’s simple and can be very effective.

Lose weight

Fatty tissue around your neck can prevent the free movement of air so if you’re not already at a healthy weight, losing a few pounds could work wonders.

Less Alcohol

Cut back on your alcohol intake. Drinking alcohol, especially before bedtime, relaxes the muscles at the back of your neck and causes snoring.

Ask for help

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist. If you have allergies or sinusitis there are sprays and other treatments that can clear your nose and help you breathe better at night.

Singing

This may be a little non-traditional but belting out your favourite tune can strengthen the muscles in your throat. Because muscles have a tendency to slacken as we get older, this can be an especially helpful technique for people over 50.

I’ve had sleeping problems this last 4 years. I had been constantly complaining to my doctors.
But then a friend of mine, after going away with me said, 'I know why your constantly tired you have sleep Apnea!’.
